This Civil War Naval sea chest belonged to Captain Benjamin Franklin Garvin aka BF Garvin.
BF Garvin served as:
Chief Engineer on the Survey Steamer Jefferson in 1851
Chief Engineer on the flagship of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron,
USS Colorado, off the coast of North Carolina between October 1864 and January 1865
during the bombardment and capture of Fort Fisher
The top of the chest bears the following:
“BF GARVIN” in block lettering, “Freight Station” in flowing script,
“PHILADELPHIA” in block letters, and another illegible word.
The USS Colorado, a steam frigate, was assigned to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron
and cruised off the coast of North Carolina from October 1864 until January 1865 with BF Garvin aboard.
She participated in the two bombardments of Fort Fisher (Wilmington, North Carolina)
on 24-25 December 1864 and 13-15 January 1865.
Of note is that during the bombardment and capture of Fort Fisher,
Commodore Thatcher on the USS Colorado, his flagship,
led the heavy wooden warships of the squadron into battle on January 13, 1865.
The USS Colorado was struck six times by enemy fire, which killed one man and wounded two.
On the USS Colorado, BF Garvin served under Commodore Thatcher and
Lieutenant George Dewey (later Admiral Dewey) as a staff officer.
