In 1873 Anthony F. Towle founded A.F. Towle & Son,
which was renamed Towle Manufacturing Company in 1882.
Some of the dies of Frank W. Smith Silver Company
were acquired in the 1950's.
In 1990, Towle was acquired by Syratech,
which had previously acquired Wallace Silversmiths
and International Silver Company in 1986.
The Newburyport plant was closed in 1994 and
sterling silver flatware production was moved to Puerto Rico.
In 1996, the buyout firm of Thomas H. Lee Co. bought Syratech,
which it later sold to Lifetime Brands in 2006.
Lifetime Brands also owns the Gorham, Whiting,
William B. Durgin and Kirk-Steiff brands,
which it acquired in 2008.
